Address by Ms Ada Chung, Registrar of Companies,
as Representative of the Judging Panel
at the HKIoD Annual Dinner cum Presentation of
Directors of the Year Awards 2011 on 29 November 2011

Good evening, KC, Kelvin, Carlye, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen.

It is with great honor that I be given the chance to say a few words on behalf of the Judging Panel. Given this year's theme of "Enhancing Director Professionalism through Board Self-Appraisal", we are very pleased that the Awardees have demonstrated not only exceptional professional skills and knowledge for good corporate governance, but also the wisdom and courage to adopt modern management techniques to increase board effectiveness and performance. I must congratulate them all for their excellent performance.

A recent survey indicates that less than 9% of company directors in HK are women. Perhaps with the exception of the board of the EOC, the Equal Opportunities Commission, I note that almost all of the awardees tonight are not women. As an advocate for board diversity, I would urge more ladies to come forward for this award, as I believe that their participation would help to promote board diversity in HK and in turn encourage more ladies to be appointed as directors.

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to commend the Institute for its efforts in promoting good corporate governance in Hong Kong. On behalf of the judges, I would also like to thank the independent consultants who have provided us with professional advice and assistance in the judging process.

I wish you all an enjoyable evening. Thank you.
